Gunners put nightmare behind them

Arsenal 2-0 Bournemouth

Arsenal bounced back from that disappointing defeat to Southampton with a crucial win against Bournemouth on Monday night.

Having suffered a real drubbing at St Mary’s the Gunners couldn’t afford to slip up again and that pressure on the team as a whole showed in the opening minutes as Arsenal started rather sluggishly.

Sunday 27 December 2015

Gunners flatter to deceive

Southampton 4-0 Arsenal

Arsenal undid all their hard work from Monday night, when they had defeated Manchester City in what felt like a real watershed moment for this team, by putting in a terrible performance against Southampton and getting trounced as a result.

Tuesday 22 December 2015

Gunners prove credentials

Arsenal 2-1 Man City

Arsenal produced a wonderful performance on Monday night to lay down a marker in this season’s title race as the Gunners defeated Manchester City 2-1 at the Emirates.

With several key players out injured such as Cazorla, Coquelin and the team’s talisman Alexis Sanchez, Arsene Wenger and the fans needed eleven heroic performances from those in red and white. That is exactly what they got. Olivier Giroud chased and harried all night, as did Mesut Ozil, Joel Campbell and Theo Walcott to help the team succeed on the defensive side of the game.

Sunday 13 December 2015

Gunners cruise to the top

Aston Villa 0-2 Arsenal

Aaron Ramsey celebrates

Arsenal rounded off an excellent week by rising to the top of the Premier League table for twenty four hours at least, after a comfortable win against Aston Villa.

Following the mid week win against Olympiacos in which the Gunners expended so much effort, this was always going to be a difficult task. After all Wenger could only name the same starting eleven as he had done in Greece and therefore tiredness would definitely prove to be factor as the game wore on.

Friday 11 December 2015

Gunners overcome the odds!

Olympiacos 0-3 Arsenal

Giroud Olympiacos

Arsenal managed to qualify from the group stage of the Champions League once again thanks to an excellent performance to overcome the odds against Olympiacos.

Sunday 6 December 2015

Back in the hunt

Arsenal 3-1 Sunderland

Arsenal responded to recent disappointing league results and devastating injury news with a crucial win at home to Sunderland on Saturday.

The Gunners needed to get all three points to stay in touch with the top of the table with results on Saturday going their way, Arsenal did just that. Following their recent poor run and the fact that Wenger had to reshuffle his starting eleven, it was understandable that the home side would start the match slightly nervously as they tried to find their fluidity.

Monday 30 November 2015

More injuries and dropped points

Norwich 1-1 Arsenal

Arsenal dropped points from a winning position for the second successive game on Sunday as they drew against Norwich.

This was a game which was very similar to that against West Brom the week before.

Wednesday 25 November 2015

Back in their own hands

Arsenal 3-0 Dinamo Zagreb

Arsenal produced an excellent display against Dinamo Zagreb on Tuesday night to keep their hopes of qualifying from the group stage alive.

Sunday 22 November 2015

Gunners endure nightmare game

West Brom 2-1 Arsenal

Arsène Wenger vents his frustration during Arsenal’s 2-1 defeat at West Brom.

Arsenal failed to seize on an opportunity to take top spot in the Premier League for the second successive game on Saturday as the Gunners lost away to West Brom.

This was one of those games that come along every once in a while where everything that can go wrong does go wrong.

Monday 9 November 2015

Gunners battle to draw

Arsenal 1-1 Tottenham

Arsenal came through a real test of strength and character on Sunday evening to salvage a point from a game in which they were second best for large periods.

The North London derby was always going to be a very difficult game for the Gunners given the mauling suffered at the hands of Bayern Munich in mid week and the number of injuries reducing Arsene Wenger to a threadbare squad, therefore leading to only one change from the side that lost to Bayern.

Thursday 5 November 2015

Gunners put back in their place

Bayern Munich 5-1 Arsenal

Arsenal

Bayern Munich had a point to prove having lost at the Emirates Stadium in their last Champions League outing, and they did just that with an excellent display that put the Gunners firmly back in their place.

Much was made of the wonderful, flowing attacking football displayed by the Germans on Wednesday night. There can be no doubt that Munich are a far better side than Arsenal, but Arsene Wenger’s side didn’t help themselves at the Allianz Arena.

Monday 2 November 2015

Gunners emerge on top in Wales

Swansea 0-3 Arsenal

Koscielny Swansea

Arsenal saw their Premier League run extended to five straight wins on Saturday with a very impressive victory away to Swansea, a side who beat the Gunners both home and away last season.

The performance from Arsenal was one that had the hallmark of a side that feels comfortable and confident in itself as Arsene Wenger’s team had to weather a first half storm. The Gunners were far from their best during the first period and even struggled to get out of their own half at times with Swansea comfortably keeping possession and putting their opponents under pressure.

Wednesday 28 October 2015

Poor Gunners dumped out

Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 Arsenal

Lucas Joao

A week, as they say, is a long time in football. Arsenal would have certainly had this famous phrase ringing in their ears on Tuesday night as they went from beating the mighty Bayern Munich to being dumped out of the League Cup 3-0 away to Sheffield Wednesday exactly seven days later.

This night had a disastrous feeling about it as early as the fourth minute when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain reported a tightening of his hamstring and had to be replaced

Monday 26 October 2015

Arsenal 2-1 Everton

Arsenal rounded off a perfect week on Saturday with a hard fought victory over Everton which saw the Gunners move into top spot, albeit temporarily.

The victory was all the more impressive, given the fact that the team had put in so much hard work and effort to see off Bayern Munich in mid-week, while Everton had the entire week to focus on their preparations.

Wednesday 21 October 2015

Gunners overcome the odds!

Arsenal 2-0 Bayern Munich

AFCvBAY_Giroud

Having lost to Dinamo Zagreb and Olympiacos, Arsenal went into Tuesday night’s game against Bayern Munich with little hope of causing an upset. That is, according to the media. But this is Arsenal Football Club, a club with a rich history of overcoming the odds and emerging victorious.

Monday 19 October 2015

Gunners defeat Watford to remain second

Watford 0-3 Arsenal

Arsenal had to overcome a difficult task on Saturday evening, away to Watford, in order to consolidate their excellent performance and result against Manchester United in their previous Premier League match.

Going into this game Watford had only conceded one goal at home

Monday 5 October 2015

Magnificent Gunners

Arsenal 3-0 United

Alexis Sanchez

After great disappointment in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Arsenal needed to produce a much improved performance against Manchester United on Sunday. They had let the fans down with their tepid display in Europe’s top competition but against United each and every player in a red and white shirt responded in the perfect manner as the Gunners ran riot.

Right from the very first whistle, Arsenal were a team transformed.

Wednesday 30 September 2015

Arsene never learns!

Leicester 2-5 Arsenal
Arsenal 2-3 Olympiakos

Arsenal supporters watching their side playing wonderful, incisive attacking football as they racked up five goals away to Leicester City on Saturday could have been forgiven for getting excited. After a slow start to the season the Gunners appeared to be getting back on track and on the way to rediscovering their best form.

However a closer look at that game suggested otherwise.

Thursday 24 September 2015

Who needs a new striker?

Tottenham 1-2 Arsenal

Arsene Wenger spent all summer telling anyone who would listen that he didn’t need a new striker. Unfortunately, the “Arsene knows” mantra has dimmed over the years and there weren’t many who believed him. Their fears were largely confirmed when the new season commenced with the Gunners appearing blunt in attack and topping the charts for missed chances.

On Wednesday night however, Wenger may just have found the solution for the centre forward position.

Monday 21 September 2015

Disgusting!

Mike Dean 2-0 Arsenal

Disgusting. This was the word Arsene Wenger used to describe Mike Dean’s decision not to send off Diego Costa on Saturday. Few will disagree.

With the game deadlocked at 0-0 and heading towards the half time break, the actions of the referee were to prove pivotal in deciding the outcome of this match. As a cross came into the Arsenal box Costa pushed both hands into Koscielny’s face before swinging his arm towards the defender, once again making contact with his face. A red card offence. Koscielny immediately went to confront Costa who barged the Frenchman to the floor. A second red card offence. At this point Gabriel intervened pulling Costa away. Mike Dean somehow reached the decision that both Costa and Gabriel should receive yellow cards. Had the referee sent off Costa at this stage, the events that followed would not have happened.

Even as Mike Dean was in the process of issuing the yellow cards, Costa continued to bait Gabriel, smacking him on the back, to which the Arsenal defender responded in kind, and continuing the verbal abuse. Having already failed to issue the correct punishment, Dean failed again here. The role of the referee is to manage the game and restore control when it is threatening to descend into anarchy. As Costa and Gabriel continued to exchange verbals, Dean should have stepped in, pulled them to one side and called the captains over too. He could have then explained to all present that they should cut out the nonsense, get to half time and calm down, if they ignored this then he would have been within his rights to send both players off. Yet the referee just stood and watched as the confrontation escalated, allowing Costa to stand behind Gabriel, knowing full well what was likely to happy. A silly little flick from Gabriel could have easily been ignored by the referee, but instead he took the opportunity to send off the defender and ruin the game. The fact that Costa went unpunished for a similar flick on Oxlade-Chamberlain towards the end of the game, only served to highlight the referee’s incompetence.

This was a disastrous performance from Mike Dean, a referee who is supposed to have experience of overseeing big games in which tempers often get flared. With eleven minutes left and the game threatening to break out into a contest, the referee decided to ruin it again, this time sending off Cazorla for a second bookable offence. A more sensible referee would have issued a final warning here rather than send off a player for the only two fouls he committed all game. The fact a player such as Branislav Ivanovic was allowed to commit three fouls before receiving a yellow card highlighted the inconsistency in Dean’s decisions.

Arsenal were more than capable to leaving Stamford Bridge with at least a point on Saturday. Chelsea may have had more of the possession and performed better than their recent offerings, but ultimately Cech was not exactly over worked. Even with a man advantage and then two man advantage, Chelsea offered very little, simply passing the ball amongst themselves and failing open up the Arsenal defence. It was therefore a source of great frustration that the opening goal should be gifted to the home side. Once again Mike Dean didn’t cover himself glory, ridiculously awarding a free kick for an imaginary foul against Ramsey, when the Welshman had cleanly won the ball.

Despite the bad decision from the referee, Arsenal must defend better. They were caught out from a corner against Dinamo Zagreb and fell asleep at a set piece again. The delivery from Fabregas was a good one, but Zuma should not have been allowed the space to run in and head home from close range. Replays showed Monreal had been marking the Chelsea defender, only to needlessly get sucked into the pack, drifting away from him as the delivery came in. Had Arsenal managed to keep the score at 0-0 going into the final 20 minutes, Chelsea would have become frustrated, needing to send more players forward and therefore the opportunity to hit them on the counter attack would have increased the more time ticked on.

Unfortunately the Gunners weren’t able to do this and from the moment they had taken the lead, Chelsea knew they just needed to maintain possession and kill the game. The second Arsenal sending off came at a time when the Gunners were threatening to build some pressure on the Chelsea goal, and only served to kill the game further. The fact the second goal of the match arrived via a cruel deflection off Callum Chambers, only served to put the cherry on the cake of a miserable week for Arsenal.

The Gunners now have to pick themselves up quickly for a North London derby in the League Cup. Despite the result against Chelsea, they can actually take pride in their performance. The result was extremely frustrating because they were more than a match for Chelsea, it was simply a case of the referee deciding the game. There have long been calls for Arsenal players to stand up for themselves when the opposition attempt to bully them. When they finally did, they were punished and the perpetrator walked away scot free. Despite the repercussions, the Gunners should continue to stand up for themselves and wise up to the dark arts employed by the likes of Costa. As they walked off at half time on Saturday, Arsenal players should have confronted Costa in an attempt to make him lash out and get himself sent off too. Unfortunately too many Arsenal players are just too nice. Football is a battle and Mike Dean has shown that the aggressor quite often reaps the rewards of weak refereeing.

Gunners flop in Zagreb

Dinamo Zagreb 2-1 Arsenal

Arsenal

Arsenal started off their Champions League campaign in the worst possible fashion in Zagreb on Wednesday night, losing 2-1 and having Olivier Giroud sent off before half time.

This was a terrible performance from the Gunners. Coming off the back of a scintillating home win against Stoke in which they appeared to be getting back to their best with quick incisive passing and movement,

Monday 14 September 2015

Gunners back on form at home

Arsenal 2-0 StokeCity
Theo Walcott

Arsenal finally ended their dismal home record on Saturday with an excellent performance which saw them defeat Stoke City by two goals and keep a third consecutive clean sheet.

The Gunners came into this game following the international break, having failed to score in their previous two home games since the start of the new season.

Tuesday 1 September 2015

Gunners win despite issues up front

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

Newcastle 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal’s win against Newcastle on Saturday only served to highlight the Gunners desperate need for reinforcements in the centre forward position.

Arsene Wenger elected to start the game with Theo Walcott up front in place of Olivier Giroud, despite Walcott having failed to impress anyone with his cameo appearance in the 0-0 draw at home to Liverpool.

Tuesday 25 August 2015

Gunners fail to score at home again

Arsenal 0-0 Liverpool

Arsenal keeper Petr Cech saves from Liverpool striker Christian Benteke

Arsenal failed to score at home once again on Monday night as they drew 0-0 with Liverpool in a match which lived up to the cliché of a game of two halves.

Following the defeat to West Ham on the opening day of the season, the players and manager spoke of the need to put that result behind them and put in a much improved performance in their next home game. Unfortunately, once again for all their talk before the game, once the referee blew the first whistle, Arsenal failed to perform.

Monday 17 August 2015

First three points

Crystal Palace 1-2 Arsenal

Alexis Sanchez

Arsenal responded to their bitterly disappointing opening day defeat to West Ham in the best possible way on Sunday, with a hard fought victory away to Crystal Palace.

In the lead up to this game Arsene Wenger admitted his side had been over confident as they approached the opening game of the season and had essentially forgotten to do the basics. In the Premier League you have to earn the right to play your game and in order to do so you need to show hunger, determination and commitment. The Gunners showed those qualities on Sunday, playing wonderful attacking football, especially in the opening 25 minutes.

Monday 10 August 2015

Disappointing start for Arsenal

Arsenal 0-2 West Ham

Arsenal supporters arrived at the Emirates stadium on Sunday full of optimism at the start of a new season that promised so much. This was supposed to be the start of a campaign in which the Gunners would mount a genuine title challenge. The players had all spoken about the strength, belief and spirit within the squad, while the manger continually spoke about the need to right the wrongs of last season and get off to a good start.

It was therefore extremely disappointing to witness a performance from the home side that lacked any hunger, desire or conviction.

Monday 3 August 2015

Crucial victory for season ahead

Arsenal 1-0 Chelsea

Normally the season curtain raiser, the Community Shield, is a somewhat meaningless pre-season friendly with no real bearing on the Premier League season ahead. Arsenal supporters need look no further than 12 months ago, when their team defeated Manchester City 3-0 at Wembley, only to then start the new campaign with a series of disappointing results which virtually ruled them out of the title race by mid-September.

Sunday’s Community Shield match against Chelsea was different.

Tuesday 30 June 2015

Gunners sign Cech

Petr Cech
Arsenal yesterday announced the signing of Petr Cech from Premier League rivals Chelsea for a fee believed to be in the region of £10 million.

This is a significant transfer for the Gunners for a number of reasons. First and foremost, Wenger has secured the services of a third genuinely world class player in as many years and finally solved a position which has been a problem since Jens Lehmann left the club the first time. Cech has won everything in the game at club level and therefore it is not only his great talent which he will bring to the team, but also his immense experience and winning mentality. His presence in the dressing room will therefore be priceless next season, especially if Arsenal can maintain a title challenge right into the last few weeks of the season.

Having a goalkeeper of such undoubted talent will also provide a calming influence on the defence ensuring that they can concentrate on defending rather than worrying about what their goalkeeper may or may not do. This coupled with the excellent screening work done by Francis Coquelin, should ensure that Arsenal fans will see a better defensive unit next season, one which will concede fewer goals as a result.

Before the previous season ended, it was widely acknowledged that the Gunners needed to strengthen the spine of the team and the arrival of Cech appears to be the first piece of the puzzle. His signing is also a statement of intent; Arsenal are now undoubtedly shopping at world class level, want to attract the game’s best players to the club and are aiming to win the biggest trophies. Upon arriving at the club Cech confirmed as much, stating how Arsene Wenger’s vision for the future had helped seal the deal.

Of course another significant aspect of this transfer is the fact Cech was signed from a direct rival. The last time Wenger signed such a high profile player from a rival (Sol Campbell from Tottenham) the Gunners sealed the double the next season. It indicates a return to the ruthless Wenger of old; the man who would move players on at the right time and replace them with better. When Campbell arrived, Arsenal already had two quality centre backs in Tony Adams and Martin Keown, but Wenger saw the opportunity to improve his squad and went for it. In the case of Cech, there is a somewhat bittersweet feeling in that his arrival almost certainly spells the end for the popular David Ospina. The Colombian is a very talented goalkeeper in his own right who performed very well last season, but cannot be labelled as a world class goalkeeper. Therefore when the opportunity to sign Cech arose, Wenger made the ruthless decision to pursue the transfer and ultimately improve his team. It is almost as though the manager has been refreshed by back to back FA Cup wins as in previous seasons, he would have remained loyal to his players and passed up the opportunity, regretting it later as the likes of Almunia, Denilson, Bendtner and Senderos ultimately proved they were not good enough to take the club forward.

The fact Jose Mourinho did not want Cech to leave at all, let alone to a direct rival, must also bring a smile to the faces of all those associated with the Gunners. His captain John Terry, underlined Mourinho’s concerns when he proclaimed Cech would be worth 13 more points to Arsenal and Chelsea must now see Wenger’s side as their closest rivals for the title next season. Mourinho has essentially been undermined by Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, a situation which must really hurt the Portuguese manager whose ego has taken a battering with this move and can only play into the hands of their rivals.

Having solved the goalkeeping position, Wenger must now sign another defensive midfielder to help take the pressure off Coquelin and replace him should the Frenchman suffer injury or receive a suspension. The manager should also sign a striker as when Giroud is not performing at his best, the side can appear blunt up front. If Arsenal are successful in signing top quality players for these positions there can be no doubt that they will be genuine title contenders next season.

Aston Villa have not won the FA Cup since 1957

In recent years the Gunners have struggled to produce their best on the big occasions, especially when it came to playing at Wembley.

Gunners back on song

Arsenal 4-1 West Brom

Theo Walcott
Arsenal overcame their recent goal drought at the Emirates with an emphatic first half performance against West Brom, in which they tore the visitors apart to secure a third place finish.

Going into this game the Gunners could have been forgiven for enduring a lack of confidence in front of goal, given the number of chances they had created during those three barren home games.

Fine run comes to an end

Arsenal’s unbeaten run came to an abrupt end on Monday night as the Gunners were defeated by a Swansea side that played without a striker for most of the match.

Gary Monk’s side set up in the ultra-defensive formation of 4-6-0, sitting deep with ten men behind the ball and enjoyed great success in frustrating the home team. Arsenal were far from their best,

Arsenal 2-1 Reading

Alexis Sanchez
When it comes to playing at the new Wembley, Arsenal never do things the easy way and so it proved yet again on Saturday as the Gunners defeated Reading 2-1 after extra time.

The FA Cup is a unique competition in itself, one in which league form and positions stand for nothing; it’s all about the team’s performance on the day.

Gunners come through tough challenge

Burnley 0-1 Arsenal

Aaron Ramsey Arsenal

Arsenal showed a different side to their game on Saturday evening in order to defeat a stubborn, physical and well organised Burnley side.

Jekyll and Hyde Gunners

Newcastle 1-2 Arsenal

Olivier Giroud

Just not enough!

Monaco 0-2 Arsenal

Olivier Giroud
Normally a 2-0 away win in the Champions League, against a side that has a European home record second only to Real Madrid, would be celebrated with great joy. Unfortunately, when such a result comes after a 3-1 home defeat in the first leg, it stands for nothing.

For the fifth year in succession, Arsenal’s players were made to rue their mistakes in the first leg,

Magnificent Giroud

Arsenal 3-0 West Ham

Tuesday 10 March 2015

We're going to Wembley!!

Man United 1-2 Arsenal

Manchester Untied v Arsenal
Arsenal headed to Old Trafford on Monday night with several doubts surrounding the team. Having not beaten Manchester United away from home since 2006 and so far having failed to defeat the worst United side in a generation, there was a feeling that the Gunners were suffering from a mental block when facing the Red Devils.

The last meeting between the two sides at the Emirates in November proved to be an extremely frustrating game for Arsene Wenger’s men as they dominated proceedings but were ultimately undone by  two breakaway goals which saw United leave with all three points. It would have been easy for Arsenal to crumble under such negativity as they left the dressing room to fight for a place in the FA Cup semi-finals, but instead they showed great mental strength throughout the game.

Wenger set his team up in similar fashion to the last time his team visited Manchester, that time securing a win at Manchester City by sitting deep, soaking up the pressure and hitting their opponents on the break.

Thursday 26 February 2015

Same old Arsenal

Arsenal 1-3 Monaco

Arsene Wenger. Shock....

Arsenal once again gave themselves a mountain to climb to qualify for the quarter finals of the Champions League, after yet another disastrous first leg.

In seasons gone by the Gunners have been undone at this stage of the competition by phenomenal performances from the best teams in the World, as the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich lit up the Emirates Stadium with displays that would eventually see them win the tournament. On Wednesday night, Arsene Wenger’s side were well and truly beaten by Monaco, a side whose name did not strike fear into anyone with affiliations to the Gunners when the draw was made.

Arsenal got themselves ready for Saturday’s North London derby in perfect fashion with a fine display against Aston Villa, recording their biggest result of the season so far as they defeated Paul Lambert’s side 5-0.

Much has been made of the form of Alexis Sanchez since he joined the Gunners, with many pundits suggesting the great Chilean has been carrying the side, leading both the scoring and assist charts at the club. When Wenger announced at the pre match press conference that Sanchez would not be available for this game due to a hamstring injury, alarm bells began to ring for all Arsenal supporters. How would the Gunners cope without their talisman?

Tuesday 27 January 2015

Gunners too strong for Brighton

Brighton 2-3 Arsenal

Monday 19 January 2015

Has Wenger cracked the code?

Man City 0-2 Arsenal

Defensive stability, discipline and great determination. Not words anyone would have associated with an Arsenal away performance against one of the top Premier League sides in recent years. Festive fun!

Arsenal 2-1 QPR
West Ham 1-2 Arsenal
Southampton 2-0 Arsenal
Arsenal 2-0 Hull

Arsenal’s results over the hectic festive period, which notoriously throws up strange results, actually read quite well. The Gunners faced two London derbies against QPR and West Ham, in the space of two days and then another tough away trip to Southampton before an FA Cup third round tie at home to Hull.
