Gunners on top form

Arsenal 3-1 Stoke

Arsenal produced an excellent performance on a wet Saturday afternoon to overcome a determined Stoke City side and maintain their recent good run of form.

The Gunners came into this game full of confidence having topped their Champions League group with a 4-1 victory away to Basel following their brilliant 5-1 demolition of West Ham the previous weekend.

Gunners escape with a point

Manchester United 1-1 Arsenal

Arsenal were extremely fortunate to leave Old Trafford with a point on Saturday afternoon as the Gunners produced an ineffectual display which produced only one shot on target throughout the entire game.

Arsenal kicked off the weekend’s Premier League action with a comfortable 4-1 victory against the league’s bottom side, Sunderland, on Saturday afternoon.

The Gunners came into this game knowing that anything short of a victory would raise serious question marks about their title credentials, given their draw in the previous match against Middlesbrough.

Complacent Gunners get away with it!

Arsenal 3-2 Swansea

Image result for arsenal 3-2 swansea

Arsenal continued their recent fine run of results by recording another victory on Saturday, against Swansea City.

It was a somewhat mixed performance as at times the Gunners were at their best while at others their sloppiness cost them dear and they could have ended up dropping points in a game that was theirs for the taking. Much has been made of the improvements that are evident throughout the side this season, but Arsenal’s ability to needlessly press the self-destruct button remains present and must be a real cause of concern for Arsene Wenger.

Last second Gunners

Burnley 0-1 Arsenal

Arsenal left it very very late on Sunday evening to secure a vital three points away to Burnley with the last kick of the game.
The Gunners came into this game in a rich vein of form having overwhelmed both Chelsea and Basel with a high intensity game of strength, power and speed. However consistency has been Arsenal’s main issue in the years since the famous Invincbles season and that same issue reared its head again as the Gunners produced a performance far below those of the previous week.

Lucky Gunners steal point

PSG 1-1 Arsenal

In keeping with the start to their season so far, Arsenal yet again produced a lacklustre display but once again got away with it, this time against PSG in the opening game of their Champions League campaign.
In each of the last two seasons the Gunners had suffered opening game defeats and going up against the most difficult side in the group, away from home, it would have been reasonable to presume that Arsene Wenger would elect for a more pragmatic approach than his usual attacking philosophy.

Last gasp Gunners

Arsenal 2-1 Southampton

Image result for arsenal 2-1 southampton

Arsenal secured a vital three points on Saturday thanks to a last minute penalty from Santi Cazorla which should not be used in any way shape or form to disguise an otherwise average performance.
Arsene Wenger decided to deviate from his normal approach to introducing new signings to the Premier League, by starting both his new additions, Mustafi and Peres. Unfortunately both struggled to come to terms with the pace and ferocity of the Premier League and as a result produced fairly average performances in keeping with that of the whole team.

Gunners too hot for Watford

Watford 1-3 Arsenal

Image result for watford 1-3 Arsenal

Arsenal secured their first win of the Premier League season on Saturday with a fine performance against Watford, racing into a comfortable 3-0 lead before half time.

The Gunners have been far from their best so far this campaign, struggling for fluidity in attack in particular. However against Watford, helped by scoring an early goal, Arsenal produced a fine display of passing and movement to at times rip their opponents apart.

Gunners struggles continue

Leicester 0-0 Arsenal

Arsenal followed their loss against Liverpool on the opening day of the Premier League season with another poor display as they drew 0-0 against Leicester on Saturday evening.
Once again Wenger’s failure to recruit a centre forward during the summer transfer window came back to haunt him as the continued experiment in deploying Alexis Sanchez up front failed once again.

Tuesday 16 August 2016

Lack of spending costs Gunners again!

Arsenal 3-4 Liverpool

Given the total lack of investment in the squad during the summer transfer window, it was no real surprise to see Arsenal completely taken apart on the opening day of the season, by a Liverpool side that were far below their best for large parts of the game.

Monday 16 May 2016

It's happened again!

Gunners show character

Man City 2-2 Arsenal

Arsenal significantly strengthened their chances of a top three finish with a 2-2 draw away to Manchester City on Sunday.

The Gunners knew that a loss would have severely dented their hopes of avoiding the dreaded qualification round for next season’s Champions League and therefore were happy to come away from the Etihad with a share of the spoils.

Jermain Defoe challenges in the air with Petr Cech

Arsenal were back to their insipid best against Sunderland as yet another drab performance lacking in commitment and ideas resulted in more dropped points.

The Gunners it seems can currently only beat teams who have completely nothing left to play for this season and therefore turn up with a distinct lack of ambition.

Friday 22 April 2016

Gunners cruise past Baggies

The Emirates Stadium witnessed Thursday night football for the first time as Arsenal welcomed West Brom to North London in a rearranged league match which saw a large number of seats left empty as the apathy around the club becomes more and more palpable with each game.

Sunday 10 April 2016

Arsenal threw away more points on Saturday in a calamitous display which summed up everything that is wrong with this team.

A game away to West Ham is always a difficult prospect but this match had a great intensity about it.

Sunday 3 April 2016

Gunners too good for Hornets

Arsenal 4-0 Watford

Arsenal made sure they got their revenge over Watford on Saturday with a comprehensive league victory against the side who had dumped them out of the FA Cup.

The Hornets had performed well on their last visit to the Emirates to end the Gunners hopes of securing a third straight FA Cup win. However they had also spoken far too much in the aftermath of that game and were made to pay as the two sides met once again, this time in the league.

Arsenal 1-2 Watford

Arsenal lost their grip on the FA Cup with yet another insipid display on Sunday as the Gunners once again struggled to create goal scoring opportunities and on the few occasions they did, failed to take them.

After a testing few weeks, the mood around the training ground should have been improved following the hard fought draw against Tottenham and then the 4-0 victory over Hull.

Wednesday 9 March 2016

Arsenal produced yet another woeful performance on Wednesday night, as they lost more ground in the title race and were roundly booed off the pitch by their long suffering supporters.

The level of performance in their defeat to Manchester United at the weekend had fallen far below the standards Gunners fans would expect but with Arsene Wenger failing to respond in the appropriate manner, it shouldn’t have surprised so many that Arsenal produced a display once again lacking in hunger, desire and commitment.

Monday 29 February 2016

Pitiful Gunners

Man United 3-2 Arsenal

Arsenal last won the Premier League title in the 2003/04 season, taking English football by storm to win the league unbeaten. Since that glorious season, the Gunners have flattered to deceive on numerous occasions, giving their fans hope in one match only to dash their dreams in the next game.

As this current season unravelled, it appeared that this time would be different and Arsenal would finally be crowned champions once again. How wrong we were. Arsene Wenger’s side had dragged themselves right back into the title race last time out with a dramatic last minute winner against title rivals Leicester. They now had to consolidate that result, grab the chance for a title challenge by the scruff of the neck and go on a run of games to cement their title credentials.

The next game away to Manchester United may have looked rather daunting on paper, but in truth United were there for the taking. Louis Van Gaal’s side have endured an average season and with 14 senior players out injured, the manager had to make do with several academy players. In the centre of defence the Dutchman deployed two players in Michael Carrick and Daley Blind who are more comfortable in central midfield, while Marcus Rojo was only just returning from a long term injury and the inexperienced Varela started at right back.

Yet Arsenal just didn’t get at them. There was no intensity to their play, no movement, no hunger or desire. For a side that is supposed to be challenging for the title, this was pathetic. The Gunners may have scored two goals, one from a free kick and the other a miss hit shot from Ozil, but other than that they didn’t really create any goal scoring opportunities from open play. Nacho Monreal had a glorious opportunity early on but that was it.

Graeme Souness described Arsenal’s performance as a joke and he was spot on. Up front Theo Walcott, picked ahead of Giroud in the lone striker role, was abysmal. Walcott was just nowhere to be seen, didn’t hold the ball up, didn’t make runs in behind, didn’t pose any threat what so ever. His poor display was highlighted further by a youngster at the other end making his Premier League debut. Marcus Rashford’s performance was everything Walcott’s wasn’t. The Manchester United man was full of energy and enthusiasm, chasing the ball down at every opportunity, offering his teammates a forward option and always looking to get on the end of things.

Rashford’s two goals were just reward for an excellent performance, which should have Walcott hanging his head in shame. In fact Walcott played a part in the opening goal of the game as in his only meaningful contribution, Walcott hopelessly lost possession in his own half and as the ball was crossed into the box, a poor clearance was seized upon by Rashford, who calmly stroked the ball home. The crowd duly went wild, acclaiming a new hero but Rashford wasn’t done there, getting himself on the end of Jesse Lingard’s cross to glance the ball past Petr Cech as the Arsenal defence stood statically, staring at the ball.

Welbeck did reduce the deficit before halftime, heading home Ozil’s free kick delivery, but Arsenal never kicked on. There was no pressure on the United goal as the Gunners passed the ball amongst themselves painfully slowly with no apparent intention to move the home side out of position or get in behind them. As a result, the Gunners ended up playing in front of their opponents and United couldn’t believe how easy it was to keep Arsenal at bay.

United were therefore able to sit back and hit the Gunners on the break and it didn’t take long for Arsenal to shoot themselves in the foot once more. Rashford once again did brilliantly as he held the ball up waiting for Ander Herrera to join the attack. There were no other United players in sight but still not one Arsenal player spotted Herrera’s run or tried to close him down as he shot from outside the box and saw his effort deflected past Cech.

Ozil reduced the deficit once again but again Arsenal didn’t kick on and didn’t threaten De Gea’s goal anymore. In fact United ended the game humiliating the Gunners as they played the ball around the Arsenal players to shouts of Ole from the home fans.

In the post match press conference Wenger claimed there was no faulting his side’s commitment. The manager had clearly been watching another game. If he truly believes that is the level of desire required to win any game let alone the league, then the manager needs to walk and the sooner the better. This team is a disgrace. They talk in the media about their desire to win the title, but when push comes to shove, they are always found wanting. If the manager can no longer identify that the likes of Theo Walcott should be nowhere near an Arsenal starting eleven then he shouldn’t be in the job. The man who stuck by his guns and gave his squad the biggest show of faith by not signing any outfield player in the summer, has not had that faith returned and now should hold his hands up and admit he was wrong. The one man he did sign in January, Mohammed Elneny does not seem to have the quality to be a success in the Premier League either. Thrown on for his first league appearance, the Egyptian just played the ball backwards time and time again despite United not putting any pressure on the ball. This all points to a squad and a manager that have lost their way massively since beating Manchester City at home. I’m sure every Arsenal fan is dreading Saturday’s North London derby.

Same mistakes cost Arsenal again

Arsenal 0-2 Barcelona

Arsenal once again gave themselves a mountain to climb for the second leg of their Champions League last 16 tie with a poor first leg result.

When the draw was made and Arsenal were paired with Barcelona the general consensus was that the Gunners would be knocked out at this stage of the competition for the fifth season in a row. The supporters filed into Emirates Stadium without much hope, however when the final whistle sounded on Tuesday night, the most frustrating thing for Arsenal fans was that the Gunners had performed extremely well and been right in the game, until they needlessly threw it all away.

Sunday 21 February 2016

Stalemate at the Emirates

Arsenal 0-0 Hull

Arsenal were involved in a poor quality goalless draw on Saturday as both they and Hull rested several first team regulars. While Arsene Wenger made a total of nine changes to his starting eleven, Steve Bruce went one better and rested ten, much to the detriment of the match.

Arsenal finally managed to secure a win in the Premier League on Sunday, with victory over Bournemouth enabling the Gunners to get their title hopes back on track.

Mark Clattenburg shows Per Mertesacker the red card after the Germany international hauled down Costa as he ran through on goal

Arsenal continued their recent abysmal form against Chelsea with yet another defeat to the Blues on Sunday as the Gunners extended their run of league games without a win to three.

As with the game at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season, this was a game that was largely decided by one moment of madness resulting in Arsenal being reduced to ten men inside the first half.

Stalemate at the Britannia

Stoke 0-0 Arsenal

Stoke Mertesacker

Arsenal returned to the top of the league on Sunday night with a hard fought 0-0 draw away to Stoke. However at the final whistle the Gunners once again couldn’t help feeling frustrated.

Sunday 10 January 2016

Gunners go through

Arsenal 3-1 Sunderland

Arsenal reached the fourth round of the FA Cup on Saturday as they mounted their defence of the cup they had retained last May with a controlled win against Sunderland.

Arsene Wenger has a fine record in this competition, with no manager in the history of the game having won football’s oldest club competition on more occasions than the Frenchman.

Sunday 3 January 2016

Poor Gunners stay top

Arsenal 1-0 Newcastle

As in their previous game against Bournemouth, Arsenal once again performed poorly but still managed to take all three points to cement their place at the top of the table.

If anything this performance at home to Newcastle was even worse than that against Bournemouth.
